Description Of SMO 254 Fasteners
SMO 254 Fasteners are made of high-alloy austenitic stainless steel specifically designed for seawater and other chloride-bearing media. Compared to conventional stainless steels like 316L, SMO 254 Fasteners have higher tensile strength and exceptional workability. They’re also resistant to stress-related corrosion cracking due to being cold-formed. These fasteners can be used without re-annealing at temperatures of up to 120°C. However, this alloy’s lack of sulfur and high hardening rate make it difficult to machine. Achieve good machining results; using sharp, overpowered machine tools with a good amount of lubrication, positive feeds, and slow speeds is essential.
SMO 254 Fasteners can be hot worked through forging and other processes between a temperature range of 982 – 1159°C. However, heating the alloy beyond this temperature range causes scaling of the bolts and reduces its workability. Annealing the alloy can be done by heating it to a temperature range of 1149°C – 1210°C, followed by water quenching. This process increases the alloy’s corrosion resistance.
While cold working SMO 254 Fasteners is challenging due to their high hardening rate, it increases their strength and toughness. Cold reduction is the only way to harden the alloy since it does not respond to heat treatment. All conventional methods can be used for cold working these alloys
