Stainless Steel 317/317L Instrumentation Valves are made of austenitic chromium-nickel-molybdenum stainless steel, which is highly resistant to corrosion and low in carbon. The alloy’s high level of valve elements ensures that it has superior chloride pitting and general corrosion resistance compared to conventional 317/317L grades. These valves are highly resistant to corrosive environments that contain sulfurous media, chlorides, and other halides, making them an ideal choice for harsh applications.
The low carbon content of the 317/317L grade alloy allows for easy welding without the risk of intergranular corrosion caused by chromium carbide precipitation. It can also be used in its as-welded condition. Nitrogen is added as a strengthening agent, and the alloy can be dual-certified as Alloy 317. In the annealed condition, the alloy is non-magnetic. While heat treatment cannot harden the material, it will harden due to cold working. The alloys can be easily welded and processed using standard shop fabrication practices.

Stainless Steel 317 Instrumentation Valves comprise 11% to 15% nickel and 20% chromium, along with trace amounts of carbon, sulfur, phosphorus, and silicon, altered with iron.
These valves have superior corrosion resistance, including aperture and pitting, higher tensile strength, and a better stress-to-rupture ratio. Due to the low carbon content, they resist intergranular corrosion in applications where heavy cross-sections cannot be strengthened after welding. Additionally, the valves exhibit superior rigidity, dimensional accuracy, anti-destructive body, high tensile strength, and smooth surface finishes. They have excellent general corrosion resistance and withstand heavy loads compared to SS 316Ti Instrumentation Valves.
